I am a premedical college student and I won’t be applying to medical school for another few years. Should I sign up for a mentor now or wait until I’m closer to applying?

If you feel like you need a mentor to help you with undergraduate coursework selection, figuring out if medical school is right for you, etc., then you should apply! However, if you have a good college counselor/other support and currently don’t have any specific questions for a medical student, then we recommend waiting until your closer to applying! We really don’t want to match you with a medical student mentor, and you not have any questions for them. Since we have more mentees than mentors, it would be great to allow that mentor to help another student who may be in greater need of advice!

I filled out the form. Now what!?

We hold matches every month! Depending on when you signed up, you should expect to receive an email with your mentor’s/mentor’s information in a few weeks. If you’re not eligible (i.e. international student) or didn’t fill out the form in its entirety, you will not be matched.

I missed the application opening! When will the application re-open?

Mentor applications are always open. Mentee applications open once a month. For the latest update on when they open, follow us on IG @med.mentors or on Twitter @med_mentors!

How long is the commitment?

Since we hope that the mentorship between the mentee and mentor is organic, we don’t have a specific time frame on the commitment! If you get along well with your mentor/mentee, you can keep in touch indefinitely! However, we hope that you can maintain a commitment of at least 2 months!

What’s the best way to get in touch with my mentee/mentor?

After you are matched, you can work together can figure out which method of communication works best for you both. Most mentor/mentees like to start off with a zoom call or phone call. For subsequent communication, emails and text messages are common.

As a mentee, can I sign up for more than one mentor?

No. Due to the limited availability of our mentors, mentees should only be assigned to one mentor.

However, if you aren’t able to get in contact with your mentor or are having other issues connecting with them, let us know. We will be happy to connect with another mentor!

How much does it cost to join?

This program is completely free!

Is this program available for international students?

Sorry, at this time, we are only pairing mentors or mentees who are attending school in the United States (US). This is because there are many nuances to applying to medical school in different countries that our US-based mentors won’t be able to help with.

As a mentor, can I get credit or put this experience down on my resume/CV?

Of course! In the past, we have helped DO medical students fill out TORCH volunteer hours and many students put Med Mentors on their ERAS application. Below is the information you may need to include in your application/form, but please reach out if you need more information.

You can put Lily Trinh as the contact person, with the email: contactmedmentors@gmail.com.
